Situated amidst key city landmarks such as the castle, public park, and surrounding sea, the museum serves as a nexus that harmoniously blends these elements, presenting a fresh narrative about the historical and future aspects of Turku and its cultural identity.
The museum establishes seamless ties with significant existing structures, extends the park onto the riverfront, and embraces the promenade with a direct link to the sea. From the sea, a continuous slope guides visitors up the stepped embankment, through the museum park, and into the spiraling interior, culminating in a breathtaking panoramic view of Turku’s cityscape from the rooftop. Rooted in the city’s rich history, the design pays homage and celebrates the city of Turku through innovative integration into the local fabric.
Designed in collaboration with WAO (WILLIAM OLMSTED ANTOZZI OFFICE OF ARCHITECTURE), for the Turku Museum for History and the Future competition.
