Wivi
Born in 1872, Wivi Lönn, a trailblazing architect in her own right, designed this stunning example of early Finnish School architecture in 1902. Originally called, Pyynikki High School for Girls, was the first major commission of this prominent architect and represents the early stages of her career.
We’re presented a task, in collaboration with Architects LSV, of conducting a building history survey of this architecturally and technologically advanced school building, we found out it was ahead of its time in so many ways. The building has served the same purpose throughout its history and represents the shift in the ideals of school construction at the turn of 20th century. Today, the building is still in use as functioning middle school.
In the building itself, one can spot traces of art nouveau architecture, which is also found in Lönn's later work. The building itself can be described as an interesting collage of architectural styles and ideas, rarely found in the buildings of this era.
